This is an antique cotton apron, or maekake, made of hand loomed katazome cotton. Dating from the early Meiji period (1868-1912), this piece has a sparrow, blossom, and wave pattern which is dyed elaborately using small intricate chugata katazome stencils. The deep rich blue that you see here is indicative of botanical indigo and it has exactly the same pattern on both sides, which requires very skillful craftsmanship. In excellent condition and appears hardly worn. Dimensions: 13 x 44" Early Meiji period Item: OR0014 http://www.orimetextiles.com
