This is an antique Japanese floor cushion, or zabuton. The zabuton is made of beautiful katazome dyed cotton and lined with hand spun, botanically dyed indigo. Katazome is a method of dyeing that uses a resist paste applied through a stencil and in this case the stencil was an impressive and intricate chrysanthemum pattern. Also of interest are the decorative red threads, which act as quilting details. The cushion is stuffed with cotton batting and can be dated back to the early Meiji period (1868-1912). This zabuton is in excellent condition, save for one very small hole in the back, which can be viewed in the sixth photograph. a fantastic antique Japanese textile, very reminiscent of old Japan, and now ready for any number of uses.

This listing is for the zabuton shown above, but i do have a pair available for $176. Please contact me if you are interested.
