christian processional banner 18th/19th century Probably Russian (French? German?) Size: 3 feet by 5 feet This two sided piece on the one side: shows a Christ figure holding the paschal lamb and also holding the staff (also referred to as a crosier or crook); this appliqued figure is flanked by flat metallic gold braid, (2 stripes vertical and 4 stripes horizontal). On the other side: a white silk shield shape containing 3 fleurs-de-lis in metallic gold stump embroidery and on top of this, a crown embroidered with gold thread; there are four wide bands of deep crimson silk velvet panels that form a cross shape. It can be noted that three fleur-de-lis on a shield were used in France after 1376 and also on the Coat of Arms of Wiesbaden (Capital of Hessen, Germany). The ground material ion this side is an Italianate pattern red voided velvet material.
