These hats were worn by women, not men, in Chitral. The design pool of many of the textiles from that region reflect a much older aesthetic, including the kntted sweaters and these embroidered garments.

The isolation of the mountain locales in Chitral as well as neighboring Nuristan in Afghanistan ensured a longevity of design tradition uninfluenced by marketplace demands. The appearance of confronting birds with crosses on their bodies (talismans) is a very old concept of design.

The condition is good, and the colors consist of a combination of natural and synthetic dyes, but with no bleeding nor fading.
