Uzbek Horse Cover, Central Asia, late 19th century, 4’3”x 3’8”

This flatwoven horse cover was made in Central Asia by Uzbek weavers. It is composed of narrow bands of warp faced technique weaving, sewn together to make this cover Such covers are used under the saddles of the horses.

These pieces have become increasingly more difficult to find in the marketplaces as they were never really woven for commercial purposes and represent an indigenous craft.

Composed of these narrow strips woven in a floating warp technique, the complete composition is backed with a thick piece of felt to be placed directly on the back of the horse, and subsequently covered with a saddle.

The condition is good and the colors appear to be all derived from natural dyes
