On a bed of mustard lies an arrangement of flowers, closely spaced, in a full drop repeat with bright colours of pink and orange set in the curvilinear grace of the Sanganeri hand block print. Sanganer is a major centre for printing in the outskirts of Jaipur, India, since the 17th century. A blend of local ingredients, common wisdom and a vibrant culture has helped create this exquisite piece. The Chhipas or the printers use natural dyes and colours to print the fabric. Eight different blocks for different colours were carved and with the skill and precision of the chhipa, this fabric was brought to life. A plethora of colours adorn this piece bringing out the intricate and delicate details of the flower, including kasumal (red), toru phooli (yellow), moongiya (dark green), white, pink, purple, and black. These colours were naturally sourced: yellow from turmeric and buttermilk, green from banana leaves, black from iron rust, red from sugarcane and sunflower and purple from kirmiz insect. This floral motif or buti is known as the “Singh Baaj” which relates to the shape of the crown of the falcon. Its design is a result of the influence of the Mughal style and the Royal Jaipur family of the late 18th century. Each buti is a flowering plant with small serrated leaves and buds. Characterized by the sheen given by the Sanjara River, this fabric exemplifies the culture of the Rajput land. Hence, the strong attachment to nature and life along with the artistic sensibilities of the artisan makes this fabric so beautiful. 19th/early 20th c. size: 26.4 x 35 inches
