kuba “Sport” Fragment, Azerbaijan, Kuba-Seikhur region, late 19th century or pre-World War One.123 x 173 cm (48.5 x 68 inches)Warp: 2-ply ivory wool Weft: 2-ply wool, range of browns, 2 passes. Knots: wool, 2-ply, symmetrical, 7.5 h x 8 v = ca. 60 / sq. in. (ca. 900 / sq.dm.) Ends: Upper, complete with knotted and braided warp fringe; Lower: reduced and lower 5 cm crudely restored with braided, knotted warps fringe Sides: original blue wool overcasting on 3 bundles of warps. Handle: loose and floppy. Condition: one hole, ca. 1 x 2 cm in lower left quadrant of central cluster; a few small quasi-holes; pile good medium full, corroded blacks. Related Examples: Eiland (1981) Plate 46b (4’2” x 10’8”) ca. 1890. comment: a thorough deconstruction of a 19th-century Russian or Western European-inspired complex floral medallion pattern, possibly contemporaneous with Kandinsky’s earliest abstract paintings. The larger compositional elements feature geometrically stylized but still recognizable versions of “figurative/representational” Blossoms and Floral clusters. The smallest motifs are familiar traditional ones, such as the repeat of 3-petal flowers on stem zigzagging on the light blue of the narrow single border, and small glyphs—birds, beasts, amulets – used as fillers in the field. note: the light pink areas alongside the ivory in the ground are not color run but very pale pink yarn used purposefully as part of design.
