Sweet little Colonial period pouch. Bolivia, 18th century. Silver wrapped silk thread embroidery on a silk velvet ground. Called a "Cacique pouch". Europeanized depiction of and indian with feather headdress standing among floral branches with peacock. In one hand a circle with roman numerals and/or letters. Can you decipher? Within minutes of my posting this, i got an email from Bob Emry with the following message... "To me the letters within the circle spell "livertad" (i.e., liberty)?--the letters all seem quite clear except for the "e" which doesn't look like an e the way we would write it now, but i can't make anything else out of it either." This is excellent and makes sense (thanks Bob) because in the last quarter of the 18th Century there was a revolution fermenting first among the indigenous populations and later those people of pure Spanish descent born in the new world which eventually led to independence for Bolivia from the Spanish crown in the first quarter of the 19th century.
