Lot 154, Star Ushak, 10ft. 1in. x 6ft. 1in., Turkey circa 1600, condition: very good, some areas of low pile, few small old repairs, few small holes, corroded brown, wool warp, wool weft, wool pile, Estimate: € 90,000 – 110,000. We sold a Star Ushak in our first sale and are now pleased to present what we consider to be an earlier and even better specimen. When comparing the two, it is easy to see the superior articulation of the star medallions and their curious infill, as well as the naturalistic small palmettes, flowers, and vine tracery upon which they are placed. The differences between the main and secondary borders are also clearly visible. In our opinion, this rug’s smaller size and noticeably brighter, more vibrant coloration add further noteworthy qualities to our assessment. These are the main reasons why we believe Lot 154 is probably about half a century older. This piece also provides a better display of the iconography, exacting geometry, and visual power that have made the Star Ushak one of the most envied and desirable collector’s rugs.
