Lot 85, Caucasian animal rug, published in Schürmann “Caucasian Rugs” plate 93 and Schürmann “Bilderbuch für Teppichsammler” 1960 plate 38, 7ft. 3in. x 3ft. 4in. Caucasus dated by Schürmann 17th century, condition: very good, both ends partially rewoven, some spots of low pile, one old repair in field, wool warp, wool weft, wool pile, Estimate: € 80,000 – 100,000. It was not hard to decide which piece to place on the cover of the catalogue for our third sale. This rug easily won that honour. First published by Dr. Ulrich Schürmann as plate 38 in his “Bilderbuch für Teppichsammler” in 1960 and again in 1974 as plate 93 in his far better known “Caucasian Rugs”, this rug is a charming example that any collector would love to own. Dr. Schürmann dated it to the 17th/18th century and suggested that it was “woven by Armenians.” He placed it in the Kuba rug section. He also stated that it “…could possibly be the smallest of its type, yet the design is well proportioned.” We know that it is unique for such a small rug to exhibit the beauty and powerful design of the much larger “Dragon” carpets, which due to their size are far more difficult to view and display.
