Anatolian Bergama Area Bellini Type Rug. Great scale, soft color with balanced but asymmetric drawing accentuating differences in both top and bottom as well as left and right hemispheres. There are five knotted bundles of silk, one in the medallion center and four others. These, perhaps representing the four cardinal directions, are found both on the triangular devices on the right and left sides of the center medallion and in the centers of the Crivelli-like stars of the two niches. This rug represents a village rendition of the classical "Ushak" 'Bellini' type. In certain areas, most notably the medallion, it is quite true to the classical form while in others a more local vernacular is apparent. As such it most likely dates to the first half of the eighteenth century or arguably a bit earlier. Size is 5'4"x6'7".
