An interesting and unusual tribal east Anatolian kilim from the Kars Kagizman or Van Hakkari area.

Opinions among kilim aficionados differ slightly as this kilim shows design elements seen in tribal kilims from the Kars Kagizman, Van Hakkari and Malatya areas. It was perhaps woven by the Atmalı, Atmanaki who originally came from Kars and have Malatya connections, or perhaps the Ağrı tribe (thanks to Deniz c. for the leads). But then it is the Herki tribe that used dyed warps, at least in rugs, so the jury is still out. The fuchine dyed warps are can be seen on the top plaited fringe (see detailed photos from the link below). The kilim has unusual side borders and lively tribal motifs with ancient roots, including rams horn guls and intriguing oval womb-like guls with triangular motifs like spires topped with crosses.

An authentic and collectible antique tribal kilim in good condition with some old reweaves to corroded weft and part of the original triangular plaited top fringe unravelled. Size 235cm x 165cm. Circa 1900.
