Katazome strip, Japan. Hand loomed cotton, indigo. 70" long (175 cm) by 13" (33 cm) wide. Late 19th to early 20th century. Ex Fifi White, Berkeley, California. Katazome refers to the resist dye technique using rice paste and bran squeezed through a stencil (katagami) to produce beautiful repeat patterns. This is a lively floral composition and was likely part of an old futon cover. Very good condition, with one 1/2" L-shaped tear.
