Kasuri futon cover, Japan. Cotton, indigo, madder. Meiji Period, early 20th century. 38" (96.5 cm) wide by 65" (164.7 cm) long, hemmed on all four edges. Excellent condition, no holes or stains. Ex Fifi White, Berkeley, California This futon cover is made of three narrow double ikat panels, with checkerboard circles interspersed throughout the serpentine stripes. The checkerboard circles that appear to be two white bars actually have very faint orange crossbars. Double ikat is a traditional resist dying technique where both the warp and weft are dyed prior to weaving.
