Lot 16, Kashan Mohtashem, Persia circa 1870, 10ft. 6in. x 7ft. 3in., 320 x 221 cm, Condition: excellent, Wool pile, cotton warp, cotton weft. This carpet, unlike the previous lot, is more typical of Mohtashem weavings in respect of design and colouration. The pattern is highly decorative and displays the level of visual sophistication to be considered a significant and collectible item from the Mohtashem workshop. The large expertly executed double niche-style palmettes are filled with the delicate and intricate strap-work inspired patterns associated with the golden age of Safavid art. The palmettes overlay a field decorated with an interconnected system of elegantly proportioned smaller palmettes arranged in horizontal and vertical rows. The major and minor borders reflect the vibrancy of the field colours but create a different rhythm to the field with its large rosettes. This carpet perfectly captures the sense of luxury found in the best Persian workshops in the late 19th century.
