This is a semi-vintage, collectible Tibetan rug that is approximately 35 to 40 years years old. The rug was hand knotted on a traditional wooden loom using age-old techniques and 100% natural dyes. It was woven by one of the most skilled weavers in Olanchung Gola village, Donga Sherpa. The rug is made from pure Tibetan highland sheep's wool (called changpel) and depicts an intricate design showing a flying dragon and phoenix within a traditional, multi-coloured, cloud-patterned border. The phoenix (arguably the highlight of this rug) is beautifully woven with exceptional details including it's extravagant flowing plume, feathered wings and exquisite head and feet. There is also a delicate flower clasped between it's beak. The dragon is shown playing with a wish-fulfilling pearl (which represents wisdom and health). In Tibet, the dragon is an energetic positive icon representing wealth and transformation, while the phoenix symbolizes peace and tranquility and is endowed with the magical powers of longevity and resurrection. When depicted together, as in this example, the dragon and phoenix also represent the communion of yin and yang. The 'khaden' was typically used for either sitting or sleeping on and is in good overall condition with a thick 8mm pile. The rug was personally sourced from Olanchung Gola village and is a distinctive, high-quality piece. The dimensions are 172cm x 100cm
