Early, rare and colorful non-Turkmen Central Asian panel. Possibly Arab Uzbek. This piece is the only one of the species that i have seen. It comes from a very prominent Bay Area collection. In all of my 40+ years in this business i have not seen another of the type, but there is rumored to be another somewhere. It shows evidence of selvedges on all sides and must have been the face of a large nomadic bag. It is approximately 30 inches square with beautiful color and handle. The back seems very, very old with very fine spinning in the knots which gives it a very supple feel for a piece with such large scale, simple design. This should be something for a collector of Central Asian material or someone who appreciates the rarity and primitive beauty of real nomadic weaving. It has had some re-piling throughout and could use a little bit more "zen" re-piling if wanted, but to my mind is fine as is. All in all the piece has real character, nice fleecy wool and stands on it's own among non-Turkmen Central Asian pile weavings. i would guess that it dates to the early 19th century or before, but it is hard to know because of the lack of comparable examples. If any one knows of another please let me know or send an image.
