Baluch prayer rug, Northeast Persia, 36" x 64" (91 x 162 cm),circa 1880. This rug appears to be earlier than many of the published examples. Its field display of zoomorphic figures is more intricate than most. The secondary motifs are varied with some subtle detail. The rug is perhaps transitional in character with some evidence of multi-tribal assimilation. An unusually wide range of color from natural dye sources is again suggestive of age. There is a considerable amount of an aubergine typically associated with older weavings. Condition is good with areas of oxidation. The rug has been professionally washed and is clean.
