Antique Silver Belt from Kerala. This massive beauty is typically worn by the Muslim Women of Kerala. a kilo of fine silver with the addition of gold tokens and jewels. The gold tokens have the words "Gold Jaya Lukshmi" surrounding an image of the Hindu goddess Lakshmi. As counterintuitive as it may seem now, Hindu iconography was not unheard of for Indian Islamic Jewelry. Muslims from the Malabar Coast and further to the south from Kerala had been a very integrated minority for generations prior to partition. There is a similar example of this belt (minus the gold)on page 152 of the very fine book a World of Belts by Anne Leurquin. Not only is this a treasure for a collector, it is easier to wear than one might imagine; it is adjustable to practically any size and is a real head-turner when paired with a simple black garment.
