Uzbek Embroidered Hat, Central Asia, late 19th century Hats are used throughout Central Asia for various purposes, sometimes under the turban of a man, and at other times women wear them. There are early 20th century photos taken by sm Dudin, a Russian photographer/artist who was commissioned by the Russian czar at the beginning of the 20th century to travel through Central Asia to document the life of its inhabitants. He took numerous photos including more than one of a hat store in the bazaars. The design is a bit unusual, and there is a corrosive red wool stitch applied to the pattern in addition to the remainder consisting of all silk. There is also a bit of a purple dye, used sparingly, that dates the textile to the latter part of the 19th century rather than earlier which would be easy to do, given the corrosive red and the nature of this unusual design. The condition is evident in the photos, there is some corrosion and a little wear at the peak, otherwise, no repair nor any stains, etc.
