Rawang Nung Men’s Blanket Rare and unusual 3 paneled tufted blanket from the Rawang ethnic group in the Kachin State, Burma. The field is woven from bast fiber (possibly hemp), the reddish head ends have an animal hair weft, either goat or dog. There are a few areas that have a bright colored commercial yarn but other then that all natural dyes. In the red field there are some bits of missing weft noted in enlargements. This piece is circa 1950 (plus or minus), definitely an old piece. The Rawang are an upland people living in some of the most remote areas of northernmost Burma. i acquired about 18 years ago in Mae Sai, Northern, Thailand. At the time there were a few pieces available in Chiang Mai and Bangkok for about a year.
