a rare antique Tajik miniature mihrab suzani / susani dating to the 19th century. It is a total gem and a rare type. The silk embroidery is exceptionally fine using a combination of basma and chain stitched. The purple silk ground (often referred to as Qanawais silk) reflects good old age. The reason why we see few of these is because not many such silks survived. The main reason being that the purple is achieved with indigo which over time corroded the silks. So the few that have survived in pristine condition (like this example in) is a rare thing. The floral design with a rainbow of natural colours is just a dazzling visual spectacle. Many (wrongly) attribute these to either Shahrisabz or Lakai embroideries. These were in fact made in Tajik lands of Central Asia than Uzbek lands. It should also not be confused for those later Surandarya embroideries that are not as fine as these. It has a beautiful cotton lining. You have to really see the piece in person to appreciate its beauty. Photos don't do justice. Offered at a fair price. size: 50cm x 40 cm (20" x 16").
