East Anatolian kilim fragment, 241 x 86 cms; 19th century; this type with sections of four connected white wool bands is usually attributed to the Malatya area (see for example, Petsopoulos “Kilims”, pp. 192-197 “The band kilims of Malatya” – he mentions they have been found in mosques where presumably their design served to create the prayer “saf”); lots of interesting features including the use of several techniques and materials – slit tapestry, brocading, wool, cotton, silk – excellent colours and palette compared to others i have seen of this type; has the feel of an older piece; professionally mounted on linen.
