18th c. Turkish Prayer Niche Embroidery Very dense metallic embroidery forming a prayer niche in center with hanging vessel. Bottom of niche with floral bouquet in vase. Thinner vase pillars go up along side. 25” w x 53” L. Side of niche has a single stem floral going up to another smaller hanging vessel. 4 ½”w x 44” l 3” flower and vine border on two sides. Bottom of 3” has single stem flower repeat across bottom. Above niche large flower and vine from sid to side with stem at center coming from upside down crescent. Six knobs 1 ½” w x 1” height at top on one side and three on the other, with three missing. Bordered all around with 1” latticed metallic trim. Some flowers appear to have had velvet base behind metallic embroidery with most velvet missing. Some metallic threads appear to have been red colored with only traces remaining. Overall silk satin background with threads completely separated all over textile. Backed with burnt orange silk satin. Hanger hooks at top back. Minor lose of metallic threads in places but discolored and worn overall. Linen between backing and front separated silk. Size: Overall 49” w x 76” L Condition: Despite wear and damage, piece is still quite intact and distinctly beautiful.
