Beautiful vintage unfinished huipil from either Tactic or San Pedro Carcha, Alta Verapaz, Guatemala. From a the collection of a well-known museum. Collector also known. All provenance will be given to the buyer only. The collector was in Guatemala at various times in the 1930's and 1940's. It was accessioned in 1955. i am dating this huipil to the 1940's, though it may be a bit earlier. Three panels have selvages on all four sides. Cotton base with cotton supplementary wefts. The reddish orange, blue, purple, green and yellow have a sheen and may be rayon, silk or probably mercerized cotton. May have been made to use as a ceremonial cover, since there is no open area to cut out a head opening. Very good condition for age. Possibly never used. See photographs, which were taken outdoors without a flash on a sunny day. I do not accept returns, so please ask questions, and if desired, request more photographs.
