Baining FIre Dance Mask, New Britain, Papua New Guinea. Painted tapa (bark cloth) over a split cane frame. Worn and danced during a night fire ritual, then most often burned or discarded. This one incorporates the form of an insect or lizard. It dates to the mid 20th century. The Baining are probably the original inhabitants of the Gazella peninsula.
