Rare, early and large Aymara bags. All date to the first part of the 19th century or before. Very few Aymara bags are this large. They were made to hold coca leaves or other herbal mixtures used for healing and ritual purposes. These bags are oversized and reflect the importance of their owner. Woven at over 12,500 feet above sea level by Indigenous Aymara Indians from fine, soft alpaca yarns they are very good examples of early Aymara weaving. The amount of blue in two of the bags is quite unusual and desirable. Additional images are available and i do have a number of other very good coca bags from this Altiplano region of the South Central Andes. These weavings are very beautiful when seen in person. The weaving is exquisite and the fiber remarkable - not to mention the color. The featured bag Is 14.25 x 12 inches.
