Pre-Columbian woven and plaited turban of alpaca wool, early Arica culture, Chile, circa 1000bc-0 ad, 9 inches across and 4 inches high. In excellent condition without any stains or losses. The turban is mainly constructed of bundles of yarn plaited or interlaced togehter as well as bound together by a 1 inch wide woven band crossing the interlaced assembly below. a turquoise bead is attached to the front of the turban and the back terminates in a pig-tail like structure descending from the main body of the turban. This uniquely constructed early textile provides compelling insight into the origins of Andean weaving.
