This is a beautiful Japanese kurume kasuri cotton futon cover from early Meiji period.

The textile has been hand woven and hand dyed with indigo. Kasuri is an ikat technique. The warp threads can be a solid color or resist dyed, and the weft thread is resist-tied in a specific pattern and dyed with indigo to form a picture when the cloth is woven. When the woven pattern creates an image it is known as picture kasuri or E-gasuri.

This particular futon has a stunning geometric pattern and has been meticulously cared for through the years. Pictures of the reverse show a few carefully placed mending patches to reinforce the strength of the garment and repair damages. It is a bold, striking Kasuri futon, symbolic of old Japan. In very good condition.

Dimensions: 49 x 59" Late 19th Century
