Semi-Antique American hooked rug, American Folk Art rug, hand woven, Labrador or Newfoundland, ca.1930-s, without a label we can only say Grenfell Mission type, a winter village scene in pastel colors, smoking chimney, the hooking is done in fine horizontal rows typical of Canadian work, with 14 loops per linear inch in many places, an average of 196 loops per square inch, the approximate size is 10in x 12 in or 120 square inches, close to an amazing 23,520 stitches to make the rug, the finest of work of the time, fibers test as rayon, Grenfell weavers used both silk and rayon, see the original pamphlet, small strips of fabric from donated stockings and undergarments, there is no mention of how society women of the time responded to the use of their unmentionables to weave rugs, but there were certainly many donations, some picks and color fading, #9183, shipping is extra
