Baluch Bag Face, w. Afghanistan, 19th c., 2’ x 2’2”

The design seen here is not uncommon but seems to appear only in bags from western Afghanistan. Usually we see the rugs from Khorassan (ne Persia) with Turkmen patterns and this is undoubtedly the ‘gurbaghe gol’, associated with the Arabatchi Turkmen and other sundry groups. While not ‘uncommon’, the relatively brilliant colors seen here are anything but typical for Baluch rugs from this region.

The colors are all derived from natural dyes, with no fading at all (see the final detail image of the back) and the condition is relatively good.

There are no holes or repair, slight wear in the lower border (see detail image) and the selvedges are loose on the left side (see overall image) but the pile is lustrous and relatively full.
