Back
An attractive late 19th Century 3-medallion Kazak. Generous size—86” x 58” (219 cm x 147 cm). Some decent pile in borders to low pile over most of the field, with spots where knots are missing (should be apparent in images), but foundation is complete, with no holes. Could be used as is (it was used to this point), but because the foundation is intact and solid it’s also a good candidate for restoration. Top end has about half inch (1+ cm) of original red kilim, bottom end has no kilim, but outermost guard border is present—both selvage sides have latter-day overcast. It has one small area where there is pale pink coloring in the white ground of the border (see image showing lower left corner)---I don’t know how to account for this because the red seems stable —possibly where some reknotting was done with an unstable red, or maybe bleeding from red “touchup”, although i see no apparent tinting. There are a couple places, most apparent on the back, where two or three lines of knots appear to have been replaced for 8-10 inches.
