Back
a very old, originally two-panel kilim woven in wonderfully rich and luminous colours. The surviving section constitutes the inner field part of one half panel. The field design consists of an endless repeat, colored in vertical rows of two and a half huge "gülbudak" motifs. The gülbudak, an hourglass shape with two lateral horizontal arms in the center and conspicuously jagged contours, is one of the frequent ornaments in Anatolian kilims. Here the motifs are larger and drawn as the main ornament. The reciprocal interplay of the primary designs and the white ground of the field produces a second design layer of alternative forms. This creates an intriguing dialogue of shapes and colours. Mounted onto canvas. Dimensions:162 x 75 cm
