Kathi Bead-work Chakla 20th Century. Kathi Tribals, Kathiawar, Saurashtra, Gujerat, nw India.
i collected these pieces over the last 30 years and have had them in storage. The condition on most is pristine, perfect, just the edging material may need an iron.
None of this beadwork is terribly old as the craft is basically a phenomenom of colonial times. It is still, however, a genuine non-commercial tribal or ethnographic art expression of a distinct and unique culture. All the beads are vintage glass not plastic, and the backing is usually handloomed cotton with random bright textiles on the edges.
I must explain something you can't see: i love the handle of this beadwork. It is very heavy and flexible, even sort of luxurious to fondle. Rug people usually understand this.
