This very fine and rare 19th century Burka, also known as a 'Chadri' in Central Asia, was made by hand in the time honored tradition for a woman of some importance, and given the level of workmanship, it was also made for an important ceremonial occasion. a Burka, for those unfamiliar, is a face veil worn by women in many Islamic traditions. This particular example is brocaded all over in fine hand spun silk on a very fine hand spun linen cloth.

** The technical name for this particular piece is 'Ruband,' a name that would describe a veil made specifically for a wedding ceremony.

Tajikistan - circa 1850 - 1880.

Dimensions: 27 inches vertical x 24 inches horizontal.
