Antique man's wrap, hinggi, from Sumba, Indonesia. Early 20th c. (1900-1925). Warp ikat. Probably from Melolo village. Classic eleven band field division with large shrimp decorating the widest bands. In between are small skull trees, andung. The second widest show mounting lions and sceptres, a motif inspired by Dutch heraldry. They are separated by a band with unidentified animals, probably aquatic. The bands closest to the extremities show wild cats, kucing hutan. In summary: an early 20th c. hinggi with clear ikat work in very good condition. As we were lucky in the acquisition we can pass it on at a very attractive price.
