An interesting Sujni kantha quilt from Bengal, Asia is an embroidered ceremonial wrap which was used as a spread for seating honoured guests during the weddings and other ceremonies. This piece is embroidered with cotton thread in several colors with a white running stitch background. Very fine and intricate handwork employing motifs of various figures, this quilt has it all- the central motif of lotus and kalka on two corners common to the craft of kantha. Motifs of animals like tiger, elephant, etc., birds, fishes, snakes, tools, flowers, leaves, plants and ratha (chariot). Some human figures engaged in everyday activities symbolic of life as imagined and experienced by the artist. It's a wonderful kinetic design with colorful running stitch borders. This type of kantha represents the highest culmination of art of Bengali needlework.
