It is hard to imagine that this is a completed prayer rug, just as it is. Most likely, it served as a exemplary model rug in the Hadji Jalili workshop. The Hadji Jalili workshop in Marand near Tabriz, nw Persia, was renowned for commissioned carpets of high quality and with a restrained palette of subtle colours, notably a pale blue and abrashed rust-browns. Clients would have come into the workshop and use this model and then create a composition to their own requirements. Perhaps with the aid of overlapped drawings of mihrabs and other designs. Thus creating their own commissioned prayer rugs. If desired, an entire mosque could be woven into the rug.
