Two classic old Baotou carpets: One with an image of a boy playing the flute, symbolizing peace and longing for a simple rural life, and phoenix looking at the sun which symbolizes the rule of a wise emperor. The border is filled with cranes which are a common Chinese symbol for a long life, the field has the typical“three colors” blue palette- the signature style for Baotou rugs. There are numerous small rewoven repairs, which are most visible on the back of the carpet. No holes or other damage. a sleeve has been sewn on the top of the back so it may be hung on a wall. l: 129cm/50in and 68cm/26.8in. Circa first half 20th century. The second carpet is a Baotou rug with classic scholar’s motif. This is circa early 20th century, there has been extensive old reweaving done on this as can be noted a beige toned areas on the field having said this there are no holes and the pile is still quite good. w: 58cm/27.8in and l: 122cm/48in.
