Arte Primitivo. Two Pre-Columbian ceramic effigy vessels from the South Central Andes. Of unknown origin, these vessels have a decidedly more primitive look that distinguishes them from other Lake Titicaca Basin ceramics. My estimation of age is speculative, but both likely pre-date the beginning of the second millennia a.d - the smaller one maybe by a lot??. The tallest figure with coffee bean shaped eyes has remnants of freely drawn black and white geometric decoration which is similar to some Altiplano region ceramics, but the coffee bean eyes are unusual. The smaller of the two vessels is plain and lacks painted decoration, but displays a prominent, erect phallus evoking generative powers. The clay of this pot shows fine, gold colored pyrite flecks throughout and it was relatively low fired. Size: 7 x 7 inches for the large figure 5 x 3.75 for the smaller.
