Zoom Webinar: "Festivals, Fairs & Rituals: Textiles, Costumes and Pile Trappings of the Eastern Grasslands of Tibet" / Saturday, April 10, 2021 / 10 – 11:30 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time, Textile Museum Associates of Southern California. Registration: https://tinyurl.com/tibetrgrbt . East of the official Tibet Autonomous Region, Kham and Amdo are remote, isolated and culturally Tibetan provinces in China. Their landscapes consist of snowy peaks and rolling grasslands on the high Tibetan Plateau, where nomadic peoples have maintained grazing cultures with sheep and yaks for centuries. Just as at American county fairs and rodeos, Tibetan nomads love to come together for spectacular annual festivals and wild competitions of horsemanship. Tibetan Buddhist culture, which is often mixed with the local animistic shaman practices, also presents opportunities for seasonal celebrations. Cheri Hunter, longtime photographer, traveler, writer, collector, and career film editor, traversed the grasslands in 2006, photographing life in these areas and the colorful festivals and rituals, several of which have since disappeared. Her article and photo spread was originally published in Hali magazine (Issue 154.) This photo talk will emphasize both the local and imported textiles, costumes and pile trappings in use throughout the Kham and Amdo grasslands, as well as in shaman rituals and horse competitions, where all of the participants, including the horses, are dressed in their finest.
