Unique Baku Rug, Late 19th century. 200 x 120 cm (79” x 47”)
a beautiful rug woven with the balanced palette characteristic of Baku, on the Caspian Sea; it is a piece with a somewhat rigorous layout. The so-called ‘kufic border’ frames the midnight blue field with a series of very interesting motifs laid out in perfect harmony. The brilliant lavender blue of the ‘horns’ glow next to the central medallion and in the geometrized boteh. The palette shows also a delicate light yellow, tan and ivory. Good condition, even medium to low pile all around. This rug was published in the book “ Rugs & Art”, Hali pl, London 2017, Plate 128, Page 230.
