Basically one of the very best! Spectacular color and strong artistic appeal. Based on its design this bag face is likely a Shakak Kurdish weaving. The Shakak Kurds were known to inhabit an area West of Lake Urmia during the 19th century. Alternately, it could be attributed to groups residing closer to Sauj Bulagh. With its superb color including two yellows, blues, green and a soft early purple and deep madder red this is certainly a mid 19th century or earlier bag face. It is in very good condition - missing only a row of knots along the top and a bit more along the bottom - its selvedges are original. There have been a number of good Kurdish bag faces published on rugrabbit in the last year or so, but this one stands out among them as a top example. Michael Rothberg published a similar piece in his book Nomadic Visions. i include it here with apologies for the color reproduction of the image. Like this one, his is an exceptional example. It has a different border system, and a bit more formal rendition of the design. Both are serious collector's pieces for sure. Size: 20 x 21 inches. Ex Ronnie Newman.
