19th century Baluch prayer rug with a very unusual dyed camel field. The "apricot" colored camel field is quite attractive. It must be the result of a light madder dye bath on camel hair. As you know camel hair is rarely dyed, but used primarily in its natural tones. There is a related piece published in Belouch Prayer Rugs, Adraskand, Inc. 1982 - Plate 25, page 60. (The image and text is included below in this post.) This Adraskand piece has a camel hair field but it was not dyed. i prefer my example for the excellent drawing of the border and because of the beautiful dyed camel hair field. The more generous spacing of the design elements is also a plus. The rug is in very good condition with no visible repairs and only a few of low areas that are minor. The wool is soft and fine. This type of rug has been referred to as a "tobbaco prayer rug", but i don't recall where this attribution comes from. Anyone? Size: 60 x 34 inches. Ex. Private collection,London.
