Prestige cloth, Dida people, Ivory Coast. Raffia fiber, natural dyes, 17 by 19 inches (43 by 48 cm), early 20th century. This prestige cloth fragment is woven of raffia fibers, then resist-dyed three times for the gold, red and black colors. Natural plant and mineral dyes were used in a very complex stitch-resist process; these cloths were highly prized by the Dida. Professionally mounted on a wood frame. From a private collection in Ohio, ex Andres Moraga.
