This is cotton noragi or Japanese worker's jacket. Made entirely of indigo, this noragi's hand-stitched sashiko design is a simple and geometric diamond pattern. From the characters sewn to the inside of the lapel it can be determined that this particular jacket belonged to a student, perhaps at a high school or university. Two darker indigo patches were at one time added to the shoulders of this garment to strengthen and reinforce this area, which saw a lot of wear. Additional, smaller mendings can be seen in the sleeves and one large patch is affixed to the inside of the coat. The jacket is in excellent condition with no rips, tears, or stains. In all this is a charming and rustic piece suitable for wear or display.
