Cotton Printed Handkerchief
Simple weave cotton imprinted with red dye.
Condition: tiny holes in the center frayed edges otherwise stable.
Size: 28 ½” x 32 ½”
1) On the top is depicted are eagle holding an alive branch and four arrows (taken from Roman iconography)
2)In the center a facsimile of the Declaration of Independence with the “July4th1776” date.
3) Above the Declaration of Independence are three portraits enframed: Jefferson, Washington (in the center) and Adams.
4) And surrounding the Declaration are roundels (13 in all) representing the thirteen colonies “New Hampshire, Rhode Island, New York. Pennsylvania, Maryland, North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina, Virgina, Delaware, New Jersey, Connecticut and Massachusetts”
5) Former left hand corner are the words:
‘’The patriotic Bostonians discharging the British ships in the Boston harbor’ Along a with a italicized depiction of the Boston tea party.
6) Lower right hand corner the words:
“General Burgoyne’s surrender to General Gates at Saratoga” alone with a depiction of the surrender.
