Exceptionally Fine Handwoven Antique Mexican Serape -Wool/Linen. Approximately 40" wide by 78" long. Although we have had the pleasure of handling several classic saltillos and literally hundreds of the much later "rainbow serapes", we have not seen anything similar to this piece. Like the classic it has the diamond center, the mosaic field and the zigzag border. What sets this one apart from the rest is that it's made of one piece and has stripes on each end with macrame fringe. The quality of the weaving is extremely fine and the condition is excellent - it retains both suppleness and integrity of the cloth and the vibrancy of the dyes. There is a small amount of color bleed (see photo 11) and a very small flaw on the outer border (photo 10). Someone wrote "schee" on the border (see photo 9) I'm not quite sure, but this can possibly be removed by a rug-cleaning specialist who knows what they're doing.
