This is a gorgeous antique hand spun and handwoven Japanese cotton bag, that was once used to store urushi lacquer bowls. The stripes seen here were achieved using the stencil-dye technique known as katazome and were dyed with natural, botanical indigo. The bag dates back to the late Edo period and is in excellent condition. The owners name can be seen on the remnants of a thin cotton patch, which was stitched to the face of the bag.
