embroidery stitches or TECHNIQUES:
Satin stitch, needle weaving (sometimes referred to as woven hemstitching or overcast bars, canvas stitch (petit point and gros point), stem stitch and a simple type of bargello stitch (in center panel only).
DESCRIPTION:
The center panel is made up of nine different/pieced together textiles, bordered by cream-colored needle woven bands, surrounded by five (again pieced-together) borders. At both the top and bottom ends are two horizontal borders running from edge to edge in the needle weaving technique using different color silk threads of:blue, light blue, red, light ochre, beige or off-white.
At the bottom edges twisted cord fringe (approx.102 count). The fringe is made up (each) of five strands of the warp thread, each knotted at the bottom. Many of them have red, or blue, or black silk threads woven into a tiny piece of linen to form a tiny handmade tassel.
The motifs are all floral, abstract floral and geometric floral.
This textile is a composite of various traditional Greek and Greek Island embroideries: perhaps borders of cushion, borders of bed valances, borders of clothing, etc.
CONDITION:
Overall stable; the piece is currently backed and anchored to a large piece of ochre colored acetate fabric. There is damage to the fringe as some are missing. There are also small areas that are damaged but they are held stable by the backing material.
Note:Similar one sold for $2300 plus buyer premium in 1995.
